Canada/French Allergens and Spices

Posted on August 16, 2016 by

For our Canadian users, creating a label through ReciPal can take a few extra steps, mainly in setting the French parts of the label like the serving size and ingredient list . We can't do much about the translation part yet, but we have made a couple of changes to help you comply more easily with allergen statements and to make sure ingredient list options like spices and flavorings flow through to the French ingredient statement.

Canadian Allergens

You've always been able to add any information on ingredients or allergens in the "Other" text fields, but it wasn't very clear how. Now when you select one of the Canadian formats, an expanded list of allergens that includes mustard seed, sesame, and sulfites will automatically appear for you to check off in the allergens section. The additional allergens show up in both English and French on the label itself. You will also see a field to provide a French translation for the manually filled in "other" allergens.

Edit (October 27, 2016): Gluten allergens are also included in the expanded list of Canadian allergens, along with the various gluten options: Barley, Rye, Oats, and Triticale. Wheat is there too, but on its own as it has always been an option. Allergens are now listed below the ingredient list of the same language for the Canadian bilingual format.

Spices and Flavorings

Another change we made is that when you select the spice/flavor option on the English ingredient statement tab, that choice will automatically carry over to the French ingredient list. For example, if your English list includes "spice," your French list will now show "epices."

Make the choice in your English ingredients, et voila.

We hope these additions are helpful and creating your nutrition labels even easier. Let us know what you think and if there's anything else you'd like to see.
