Canadian Horizontal Label Format
We’ve just added the Canadian horizontal format as another option within ReciPal. Based on your packaging, the horizontal format can be a great way to optimize the space. This is especially useful for things like granola bars, snacks, or other products with wide packaging.
In this article we’ll answer the questions of:
- When should you use the Canadian horizontal label format?
- Do you qualify for the simplified Canadian horizontal label format?
- What should you do if the Canadian horizontal label format doesn’t work for your product?
When to use the Canadian horizontal format?
The Canadian horizontal format is a great fit when vertical space is limited on your packaging. Before selecting this format you must make sure that your packing meets the criteria. The horizontal label is considered a second level option and before using it, all first level options must be exhausted. These first level options include the standard (i.e. vertical) format, standard condensed, and standard bilingual.
Do you qualify for the simplified Canadian horizontal format?
Within the Canadian horizontal format, you can opt for the simplified version if applicable. The simplified version is allowed for foods whose nutrient value is "0" for 6 or more of the calories and core nutrients and can be a great way to save space. Don’t worry - we make it easy by only giving the option if you meet the criteria. If you do meet the criteria, you can select this under the “Optional Nutrients” section of the Label page.
What if the Canadian horizontal label format doesn’t work for your product?
If the Canadian horizontal format doesn’t work for your product, then you would move to third level options. Third level options include the linear format as well as any format or version of the other types. Third level options can also include alternative methods such as package inserts, fold out labels, or over-wraps. Before using a third level option you must exhaust all the first and second level options.
What’s next!
This update follows a number of others to create more flexibility for Canadian formats. A few months ago we introduced the 100 gram label format for Canada. After that, we added functionality to combine both French and English on the linear label format. We’re planning to roll out even more options in the near future. Let us know what you think we should tackle next!
