Hiding Added Sugars Grams for Single Ingredient Products Like Honey

The FDA recently released guidance on labeling single ingredient products like honey and syrups. These are ingredients that are added sugars themselves, but with the new 2016 nutrition labeling rules were also required to include the added sugars line on their nutrition labels. While this seems reasonable, some customers found this confusing, since there isn't anything "added" to the product.

As you can imagine (or at least, we can imagine!), the sugar lobbyists marched to Washington and tried to do something. Here's the resulting guidance from the FDA on single ingredient added sugars.

Our Critical Take!

To be perfectly honest, this will probably just confuse consumers more since they now have a %DV on their label without the corresponding grams of Added Sugar, but rules is rules.

Regardless, to solve that problem for our customers who want to follow this guidance, you can now toggle the grams section of the Added Sugars portion of your nutrition labels if your recipe is made up of a single ingredient.

Clicking the option in the example above would remove the "17g" so the line would just say "Includes Added Sugars", followed by the "34%" in the % Daily Value column. The simplified option isn't required, but is often used for simple products like honeys and syrups, so we included it for fun :)

Pretty simple, but hopefully helps a few of our sugars and syrups customers and makes our nutrition label maker just a little more useful! Let us know what you think!
