Recipe Cost Calculator

Posted on April 09, 2013 by

Originally we only offered nutrition analysis and nutrition fact labels for your recipes. But we know there is a lot about your food business you wouldn't mind help with besides nutrition fact labeling. Now food entrepreneurs are able to calculate recipe costs using ReciPal.

How it Works

The way it works is for each ingredient you enter the amount you buy (in grams) and how much you pay. Then, based on your recipe we calculate how much you spend on each of those ingredients per recipe.

On top of that, you can also enter any labor costs, packaging cost, and overhead costs like kitchen rentals. We factor all this in to provide you an overall cost per recipe and per package.

We'll be adding a video tutorial and more details soon, so be on the lookout!

Edit (4/18/2014): We've made LOTS of updates to the recipe cost calculator. Now you can enter the price of each ingredient with units other than grams. We've added margins to figure out pricing more easily. We also allow you to add non-food ingredients, like labor and packaging, to your recipes - creating a full bill of materials and separating out different packaging and labor costs a bit more.

How to Use The Results

You can use the results to identify which aspect of the production process is the most costly. Then you can try to minimize that, whether it's a particular ingredient, packaging, or labor. Additionally, this cost can help guide your wholesale and retail prices so you can be sure you're building an appropriate profit into your pricing.

The Future and You

We think this is a big step in offering a full suite of tools to help you run your food business.

If you have other pain points, please let us know! We're always looking for other ways to help food startups get off the ground and focus on their food instead of worrying about mundane aspects of their business like labeling and cost breakdowns.
